In addition to the doctors and Stoltzfus, several borough electric department representatives were on hand to participate in the ceremony that put the solar energy system into operation.
Assistant Electrical Superintendent Jeff Heverly said his senior meter technician, Steve Harris, wanted to make sure everything was working correctly and the metering system worked the way it should. That system measures both electricity generated by the solar panels and borough electricity used by the building. Harris said the doctors' system is the first three-phase solar generation system in the borough, and by far the largest so far.
In a compromise, the borough decided to allow the doctors to put the system in operation. Borough officials have argued that widespread use of such systems could compromise the borough's formulae governing electric rates for traditional customers.
They describe the borough's electric department as a pool of users who buy electricity wholesale and pass the savings on to users.
Enders said he hopes that using his practice's solar system will give the borough the information needed to help integrate renewable energy into its overall energy portfolio.
"It is not just economics, but something that is good for the environment," he said. "This entire area was once farmland, and today a lot of it is covered with buildings and concrete."
